FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions from our mailbag

Q: I just found you through Youtube - and I gotta say your app looks amazing.  I am a total beginner on trumpet, but I am serious about learning and loved jazz all my life.  Is this app any good for beginners at all or not?  Please let me know so that I can make a decision!

A: Oh yes, this is an excellent app for all levels.  You see as a beginner you can slow down the tempo on ALL songs to a crawl allowing you to take your time with each song.  As you get better on each song you can increase the tempo.  Additionally you can hear the chords being played via piano sounds while going through the exercises. This will translate to good results on your actual trumpet.  Know that Trumpet Pro is not a substitute for actual practice!  Good luck.

Q:  You are filling a gap, but I think it is quite expensive for a iPhone app. Anyway: I bought it so there is a market. But where is the count- in. It starts right away! how can I be ready???

A:  Due to popular demand, we recently updated the app so that an optional count-in is available.  It will count 1 measure for very slow tempos, 2 measures for faster tempos and 4 measures for extremely fast tempos.  The option is available in the Sounds/Display option of all versions of Trumpet Pro including the iPad version.

Q: Is it possible to switch the notation from ABCDEFG to the Do re mi fa sol notation?

A: Yes this is a function that we recently implemented.  Try downloading the latest version.

Q: Is there a sort of a quiz inside that helps you train your memory?

A: Trumpet Pro tells you when you make a fingering mistake as the incorrect note is marked in RED so you can tell immediately whether or not you're pressing the correct fingerings for a note.  Simply repeating an exercise over and over will certainly train your fingers and ears.

Q: Does the trumpet sound when you touch the trumpet keys?

A: Not really.  You press the PLAY button which starts the song playing and it's up to you to follow the song or exercise that's playing on screen.  It's not like other music performance apps where you press the buttons and maybe blow into the microphone.  I've never liked those apps as they are really unproductive for trumpet playing.  Those apps are simply toy music makers.  The novelty soon wears off and you're left without any benefit.  Also it's my understanding that getting moisture into your microphone through condensation is not really good for the phone.  The big problem with having to touch a key to play is how you handle notes such as G, middle C, low C, high G where they are played ALL OPEN?  You have to blow or tilt the phone - creating condensation and it's kind of wierd blowing into your phone in public.

Q: Can I input any song into the program?

A: The music you enter into the iPhone/iPod version is limited to 8 bars of quarter notes/rests or 32 notes total in a short passage.  The iPad version enables you to enter 32 measures or 128 notes in total.  Additionally you can simply enter the chords without the trumpet music at all.  The idea is to help you master a short sequence of notes using repetition such as Flight of the Bumbleebee or Carnival of Venice.  You cannot enter half notes, 16th notes, 8th notes, dotted notes or notes outside of the range of C above the staff to F sharp below the staff.

After inputting your song you can then email the song to your friends who can input the new song into their iPhone with a single tap.
